GlycoSan

Proven Technology to Control Emissions of Ammonia and other Noxious Gases in Aquaculture Ponds

The performance, mortality and growth of tiger shrimp, vannamei, prawn and fish in culture systems are closely influenced by environmental conditions which are complex and dynamic ecosystems. The success or failure of culture is determined to a great extent by factors which control physico-chemical and microbiological features of pond waters.

GlycoSan from Neospark is a high quality Yucca schidigera liquid extract formulation for improvement of production performance of Penaeus monodon, Litopenaeus vannamei and other commercially important aquaculture species.

The most important factors which have to be monitored in aquaculture ponds are ammonia level, dissolved oxygen and plankton balance to obtain optimum yield. Aquatic animals like shrimps, prawns and fishes utilize dissolved oxygen in water for respiration. Ammonia being heavier than oxygen, naturally decreases dissolved oxygen when it is accumulated in pond bottoms. The buildup of ammonia even to the level of 0.25 ppm will reduce the dissolved oxygen to a greater extent which causes mortality. The growth of plankton is also reduced because of accumulated ammonia. The collapse of plankton can be identified by change in the colour of pond water.

Why is ammonia gas dangerous to aquatic animal health?
Ammonia is an irritating and toxic gas that is excreted in the feces and also from the decaying of protein. This gas must therefore be detoxified in the liver or hepatopancreas, which uses energy, and is suppose to be conserved by the animal for muscle building and other productive purposes.

The result of continued exposure to ammonia affected negatively the feed intake, growth rate, survival rate and immunity system of the animal. Feed conversion efficiency is also affected which is very uneconomical for the farmer. It is therefore important for the farmer to have an awareness of the potential loss in the performance of animals exposed to prolonged high levels of ammonia.

Researchers have demonstrated that high levels of ammonia on shrimp, prawn and fish farms are detrimental to the animal's health, performance, growth and productivity. These nitrogen compounds have shown to cause respiratory problems by causing damage to gills, poor performance and even the animal's death. GlycoSan is the natural answer for these problems.

Mode of Action
GlycoSan is a novel high technology product that inhibits urease enzyme activity and therefore reduces ammonia gas levels and other odours in the organic waste of aquaculture pond.

Advantages from using GlycoSan

  • Gas reduction: GlycoSan reduces ammonia and other irritant gases in confined ponds, thereby creating healthier living conditions, including lower stress levels, to help improve feed utilization and growth rates.
  • Odour reduction: GlycoSan reduces waste odour, thereby creating a better environment for animals.
  • Sludge: GlycoSan minimizes the sludge building in aquaculture ponds, making the healthy ecosystem for better survival and growth of shrimp, prawn and fish.
  • Economical: GlycoSan is the most cost-effective formulation to add for improved performance, allowing producers to maximize returns by reducing mortalities.

The efficacy of GlycoSan doesn’t have an effect on the wide range of physico-chemical parameters of ponds which includes salinity, temperature, pH, alkalinity etc. GlycoSan works effectively to reduce ammonia levels. The result of the test pond shows the reduced levels of ammonia when compared to control pond (as shown in graph).
