Retained placenta
Retained placenta

Retained placenta is the failure of placenta to separate from the uterine wall after calving.
The cow normally expels the placenta within an hour or two after calving. The placenta is considered retained if the animal does not expel placenta within 12 hours after calving.

Treatment of the cow with retained afterbirth should be aimed at expelling the afterbirth and preventing infection of the uterus.
