Autoxidation can be defined as a spontaneous irreversible chemical reaction in which molecular oxygen combines with nutrient principles in feed or raw materials, resulting in, rancidity. Animal fats, vegetable oils, vitamins and pigments are highly susceptible to this spontaneous reaction.
Oxidation causes reduction of nutritional value, palatability, production of toxic compounds that affect the health and performance of bird or animal.
Control of Autoxidation Autoxidation can be controlled by the use of antioxidants. The phenomenon of autoxidation being complex, an ideal antioxidant would be a system, which can take care of the various stages of autoxidation. An ideal antioxidant should have the following characteristics.
- Prevent free radical formation.
- Absorb any free radicals that are formed.
- Ensure thorough and complete diffusion / dispersion in feed.
It is very difficult to contain oxidation due to addition of high amounts of unsaturated vegetable oils in the poultry feed, moisture levels and storage time.
Additional dosage of antioxidant is required to control effectively the oxidation process depending on the above factors. An antioxidant should be introduced at the earliest point in the processing of feed/raw materials in order to get the maximum benefit.
